Shine for SSAA choir (2013)

Program Note

“Shine”, for SSAA women’s choir, was composed in December 2013 during my studies in the Republic of Georgia. The song was premiered by the Twin Cities Women’s Choir after winning their 2013 Mary Bussman Emerging Female Composer Choral Competition. The text is an original poem I wrote as a child, a simple reminder to look for the light in darkness:

Where the sun shines not
will soon be illuminated.
By traveling dawn or meager candle bright,
may it shine.
Light emanates from all,
surrounding us forever.

While the melody is simple and almost folk-like, the harmonies and cadences are inspired by the traditional Georgian vocal polyphony that I was immersed in while writing it.
